Jerusalem in the Islamic period

In 638, Muslims captured Jerusalem, declared the Temple Mount to be Islam's holiest site, and within a century built the Al-Aqsa and Dome of the Rock monuments on the hill.
According to Muslims, the Prophet Muhammad, traveling at night from Medina to Jerusalem on the Winged Lightning Horse, “placed his sacred foot on the Rock of Moriah, which swayed between the earth and the sky.” There was a roar that reached the gates of heaven, and the Rock let out a joyful cry. But the prophet ordered silence and entered the gates of heaven. And the Rock fell again to the earth and rose again, and is still in its movement.
