Daily life of Egyptians

The ancient Egyptians were primarily peasants tied to the land. Their dwellings were intended only for family members and were built from mud bricks designed to retain the sun's heat. Each house had a kitchen with an open roof, on which there was a millstone for grinding grain and a small oven for baking bread. The walls were painted white and could have been covered with a tapestry of painted canvas. The floor was covered with reed mats, on which stood wooden chairs, raised beds, separate tables and extensive furniture.
The ancient Egyptians placed great importance on hygiene and appearance. They bathed mainly in the Nile, using soap made from animal fat and chalk. Men shaved their entire bodies for cleanliness and used perfumes and aromatic creams to hide unpleasant odors and soothe their skin. Clothing was made from simple linen sheets, and upper-class women and men wore hats, jewelry, and makeup. Children did not wear clothes until they were 12, and at this age boys had their heads circumcised and shaved. Mothers were responsible for childcare, and fathers were responsible for the family income.
