About 20 kilometers from Manaus, the waters of the Rio Negro merge with the slightly murky waters of the Rio Solimões, which flow side by side for 6 kilometers before emptying into the Amazon. This point can be reached by boat from Manaus, known as Encontro das Aguas or "Meeting of the Waters".
Other boat trips are also available that take you into the heart of the rainforest and the network of canals, rivers and lakes created by the three rivers. The Anavillanas Islands in the Rio Negro form an archipelago of streams, lakes and flooded forests that constitute a complete fragment of the Amazon ecosystem.
Here, while boating, you can see sloths, toucans, turtles, monkeys, parrots, caimans and other wild animals. Just outside of Manaus is the 688-hectare Janauari Ecological Park, which has several different ecosystems that can be explored by boat.
The centerpiece of this place is a lake covered with water lilies, which can only be found in the Amazon jungle. Be sure to visit the famous Italian Renaissance Opera House in Manaus, which was designed to put Manaus on the map and establish it as a center of South American culture.
