Sochi (Russian:Sochi), a resort city in the Krasnodar region of Russia in the Western Caucasus, on the Black Sea coast. Located on the southern slopes of the main Caucasian peak, the urban-type settlement of Krasnaya Polyana, together with the surrounding villages, the city of Sochi forms a municipal entity - the city-medical district of Sochi, which is also unofficially called Greater Sochi. Sochi is the largest resort city in Russia, an important transport hub, as well as the largest economic and cultural center of the Russian Black Sea region.
The permanent population of the city of Sochi is 368,011 people (2013), and the city-resort area of Sochi is 445,209 people (2013). In terms of population, Sochi ranks 5th in the Southern Federal District after Rostov-on-Don (1,103,733), Volgograd (1,018,790), Krasnodar (784,048), Astrakhan (527,345) and 49th in Russia. Among the Black Sea cities, Sochi ranks 3rd in population, behind Odessa and Samsun and slightly ahead of Sevastopol, Trabzon and Varna, and is also the longest city in Russia and Europe.
The XXII Winter Olympic Games were held in Adler, Sochi region, and in the village of Krasnaya Polyana, located 39 km from the Black Sea in the mountains. On September 15, 2009, Sochi joined the World Association of Olympic Cities.
The date of foundation of Sochi is April 21, 1838 (in the old book).
In preparation for the Olympics, 500 billion rubles were spent on the development of the city and its infrastructure (not related to the Olympics).
