Christmas in Finland

Christmas in Finland

Christmas in Finland (Finnish: Joulu Finland, Swedish: Jul i Finland) is a public holiday in Finland, celebrated on December 25 according to the Gregorian calendar, dedicated to the birth of Christ. The Christmas season begins with Advent (December is Finnish for "December") and lasts for a whole month. It is not only a period of preparation for the holiday, but also of organizing charity fundraisers and fairs for those in need.
The traditional birthday celebration of the President of Finland takes place at the Mantuniemi residence, when Lucia, elected by the Swedish-speaking population, sings birthday songs, students of the forestry department of the University of Helsinki present a Christmas tree, the fishermen of Korpu present fresh wolf fish, and the farmers of Vehmaa present a Christmas pork knuckle. The tradition of congratulating the head of state, which began during the presidency of Urjo Kaleva Kekkonen, has in recent years been supplemented by flowers from the Florists' Association and eco-food baskets from environmental organizations and animal rights activists.
The Finnish phrase "Black Christmas" refers only to the lack of snow on the streets during the holidays, which has become common in 21st-century Finland due to climate change.
A number of people in the country experience stress during the holidays due to loneliness, so the role of the helpline has increased in recent years.
