History
Tokyo was formerly known as Edo. In 1603, Shogun Ieyasu made the city Tokugawa his headquarters, and it became the de facto seat of government. In 1868, Emperor Meiji moved his residence from Kyoto to Edo, and the city was renamed Tokyo, meaning "eastern capital".
