Zamok Petrin

Zamok Petrin

Petra Castle, also known as Petra-Tsikhe or Petra-Tsikhisdziri, is a historical and archaeological complex that includes a citadel and ancient settlements. Archaeologists date different parts of the castle to different ages: from the Bronze Age to the late Middle Ages. In the 4th century, the Byzantine emperor Justinian founded a fortified city here and built a temple. The castle was of strategic importance at the crossroads of trade routes connecting the eastern regions of the Black Sea region with Georgia, Armenia, Byzantium and Persia. The Russian-Turkish bloodshed of the 19th century took place here.
