About Hurghada

At the beginning of the 20th century, Hurghada was a small village on the Red Sea coast, home to British oil workers and local fishermen. Then, after the signing of the Camp David Agreement between the Republic of Egypt and Israel, it began to transform from a military zone into a resort. The city is known for its water sports, nightlife and warm weather. Daytime temperatures are around 30 °C (86 °F) most of the year, and in July and August temperatures can reach over 40 °C (104 °F). Hurghada is a popular holiday destination among Europeans, especially in winter, and some spend Christmas and New Year there. The number of tourists from Russia has dropped significantly since the crash of Metrojet Flight 9268 in November 2015. Hurghada extends approximately 36 kilometers (22 miles) along the coast, but does not extend far into the surrounding desert. It is a resort for Egyptian tourists from Cairo, Delta and Upper Egypt, as well as package tourists from Europe. Hurghada has a population of 248,000 and is divided into:
El Ahiya and El Helal - northern sector
El Dahar (center) - old city
Sakala – city center
El Kawthar - the modern part
El Mamsha (country road) is a 4 km (2.5 mi) long pedestrian street.
Many of Hurghada's new hotels, restaurants and shops are located along El Mamsha. Most of the newest and largest hotel resorts are located in the area between Mamsha and Sahl Hasheesh in El Mamsha. Outside of Sahl Hasheesh there are hotels in Makadi Bay. Dahar is the oldest part of the city and is home to the city's traditional bazaar, post office and intercity bus stations (Go Bus and Upper Egypt Bus). The busiest area is Sakala, the "downtown" of Sheraton Road, with hotels, shops and restaurants.
The city is served by Hurghada International Airport, which provides regular passenger services to Cairo and directly to several European cities. A new terminal opened in 2015 to accommodate growing traffic.
