The National Center for Arts and Culture Georges Pompidou is a cultural institution located in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. The Pompidou Center was named after French President Georges Pompidou, who made a major contribution to its creation. It was opened in 1977 by President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing. The center's activities are devoted to the study and support of contemporary and twentieth-century art in its various manifestations (art, dance, music, etc.). The Pompidou Center also includes the Paris Museum of Modern Art, which is the largest museum of modern art in Europe, a large library, concert and exhibition halls, and the Institute for Research and Coordination of Acoustics and Music. The square in front of the Pompidou Center is very popular with artists, street performers, musicians and circus performers.
