Leaning Tower of Pisa

Leaning Tower of Pisa

It is located in the city of Pisa in Italy and is considered the bell tower of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

The construction of the famous tower was carried out in two stages, with two breaks, and quite a long one. Construction took place in 1173-1360. The reasons for the tower's tilt are unknown, but it is believed to have been due to groundwater seepage and significant undermining of the foundation, or the tower's foundation was found to be unreliable.
Until it was restored, its inclination to the south was 5.5 degrees. At the moment the tower is tilted only 4 degrees.

The construction of the “leaning tower” was started by master Bonnano Pisano. When the tilt of the tower became visible, the first floor and two rings of columns had already been built. Construction stopped and the master left the city.

There are seven bells on the tower, all of them tuned to seven musical notes. The bell tower of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is considered the most beautiful in sound.

There is a legend according to which G. Galileo conducted his experiments in the Leaning Tower of Pisa. They say that the scientist stood on the top floor of the tower and threw various objects down. He tried to prove that the speed of falling does not depend on the mass of the falling body.

The height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa can be compared to an eight-story building. This iconic structure in Italy weighs 14,453 tons.

It was originally planned that the tower would have 10 floors, with balconies on them, and the height of the tower would be 98 meters, while only 56 meters were built.
