Overview
Barcelona combines a big-city break with a beach holiday: in one day you can admire Gaudí's architecture, wander medieval lanes, swim in the Mediterranean and finish with tapas late into the evening. Booking a hotel in Barcelona in the right neighbourhood helps you make the most of it, because each district has its own character, from the grand avenues of Eixample to the seaside streets of Barceloneta.
The capital of Catalonia is famous for modernist buildings by Antoni Gaudí: the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló and Casa Milà (La Pedrera). The old town, Ciutat Vella, includes the Gothic Quarter with its cathedral and hidden squares, the creative El Born district and the busy La Rambla with the Boqueria food market. Above the city, Montjuïc hill offers gardens, museums and views over the port.
Barcelona suits couples, friends and families alike. From June to September the city beaches are perfect for swimming, and the promenade is lined with seafood restaurants serving paella and grilled fish. Football fans can visit FC Barcelona's home ground, art lovers have the Picasso Museum and the Miró Foundation, and food lovers will enjoy tapas bars, vermouth and pastries in the neighbourhood of Gràcia. Getting around is easy on foot and by metro, and many of the main sights lie within a short ride of each other, so even a long weekend feels full.

See hotelsWhen to go
The best time to visit Barcelona is May to June and September to October, when the weather is warm, the sea is pleasant and the city is less crowded than in midsummer. July and August are hot and humid, perfect for the beach but the busiest and most expensive period. Winter is mild and sunny on many days, though too cool for swimming, and it is a good season for museums, Gaudí sights and lower hotel prices. Prices also rise during major trade fairs and congresses, so book early for those dates.

Good to know
Book timed tickets for the Sagrada Família, Park Güell and Casa Batlló online well in advance, especially in summer, as popular slots sell out.
Keep your phone and wallet secure on La Rambla, in the metro and on the beach, where pickpockets target tourists.
Locals eat late: lunch is usually around 14:00 and dinner from 21:00, so many restaurants are quiet earlier in the evening.
From El Prat airport, the Aerobús goes directly to Plaça de Catalunya, and the metro covers the city well; a multi-trip transport card is convenient.
Tipping is not obligatory, though leaving a few euros for good service is appreciated; hotels add a city tax per person per night to the bill.

Four nights are enough for the main Gaudí sights, the Gothic Quarter, a market visit and an evening on the seafront. In summer, plan five or six nights to add beach days, or a day trip to Montserrat or the coastal town of Sitges.
Yes, that is one of Barcelona's biggest advantages. The city beaches start at Barceloneta, a short metro or walk from the old town, and stretch for several kilometres. From June to September you can spend mornings at Gaudí's buildings and afternoons by the sea, especially if you stay in Barceloneta or near the seafront.
