Overview
Paris is one of the easiest European capitals to fall in love with: grand boulevards, riverside walks, world-class museums and a café on almost every corner. Choosing the right hotel in Paris makes a big difference, because the city is compact and the metro is excellent, so a well-located room lets you walk to the Louvre in the morning and sit on a terrace in Saint-Germain by evening.
The city is divided into 20 arrondissements that spiral out from the Seine. The central ones (1st to 8th) hold most of the famous sights: the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame on the Île de la Cité, the Musée d'Orsay, the Champs-Élysées and the Arc de Triomphe. Further out, Montmartre keeps its village feel around the white domes of the Sacré-Cœur, while the Marais mixes medieval lanes, galleries, falafel shops and boutiques.
Paris works for every kind of trip. Couples come for river cruises, rooftop views and long dinners; families pair the city with a day at Disneyland Paris; shoppers head to the department stores on Boulevard Haussmann and the concept stores of the Marais. Food is a reason in itself, from fresh croissants and baguettes to steak frites, cheese, macarons and classic bistro menus. Day trips to the Palace of Versailles are easy by suburban train, and in the evening the illuminated bridges and quays of the Seine are made for a slow walk.

See hotelsWhen to go
The best time to visit Paris is spring (April to June) and early autumn (September and October), when days are mild and ideal for walking. Summer is warm and busy, with occasional heat waves; in August many Parisians go on holiday and some small shops and restaurants close. Winter is cool and often grey, but December brings Christmas lights and markets, and January and February are usually the quietest months with lower hotel prices. Hotel rates also rise during major trade fairs and fashion weeks, so book early for those dates.

Book timed tickets for the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and Versailles online in advance; walk-up queues can take hours in high season.
The metro and RER are the fastest way around; from Charles de Gaulle airport take the RER B train or the Roissybus to Opéra.
Service is already included in restaurant bills in France, so tipping is optional; rounding up or leaving a few euros for good service is appreciated.
Watch your bags and phone on the metro and around busy sights such as the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre and the Louvre, where pickpockets are common.
Paris hotels charge a small city tax per person per night, usually paid at the hotel, and rooms in central buildings tend to be compact, so check the room size before booking.
