Overview
Rome is a city where nearly three thousand years of history sit side by side with everyday life: ancient columns next to espresso bars, Baroque fountains in busy squares and Renaissance masterpieces a short walk from your hotel. Choosing a hotel in Rome close to the historic centre means you can explore most of the famous sights on foot and come back for a rest in the afternoon heat.
The ancient city is centred on the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill. A short walk away lies the historic centre, with the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. Across the Tiber, Vatican City holds St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel, while the cobbled lanes of Trastevere fill up every evening with diners and street musicians.
Rome is ideal for a cultural city break, a romantic getaway or a family trip with older children who love history. Food is a highlight in its own right: Roman classics such as carbonara, cacio e pepe and amatriciana, crispy supplì, pizza by the slice and gelato after dinner. With a few extra days you can add easy trips to Tivoli, the ruins of Ostia Antica or the hill towns of the Castelli Romani, all reachable from the city by public transport, and return in time for an evening walk past the floodlit fountains.

See hotelsWhen to go
The best time to visit Rome is April to June and September to October, when temperatures are comfortable for long days of sightseeing. July and August are hot, sometimes very hot, and the main sights are crowded, though evenings are pleasant for dining outside. Winter is mild compared with Yerevan, with some rain, fewer queues and lower hotel prices, apart from the Christmas and New Year holidays. Easter and major Vatican celebrations bring large crowds and higher prices, so book well ahead for those dates.

Good to know
Book the Colosseum, the Vatican Museums and the Galleria Borghese online in advance; timed tickets save hours of queuing, and the Borghese requires a reservation.
Cover shoulders and knees when visiting St Peter's Basilica and other churches, otherwise you may be refused entry; a light scarf is handy in summer.
From Fiumicino airport, the Leonardo Express train runs directly to Termini station; from there the metro and taxis reach every central area.
Refill your water bottle at the nasoni, Rome's free public drinking fountains, and wear comfortable shoes, as the cobblestones are tiring.
Restaurants may add a small cover charge (coperto) to the bill, and hotels collect a city tax per person per night, usually paid on arrival or departure.

Contact our teamSpring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are the most comfortable seasons, with warm days and pleasant evenings. Summer is hot and busy, while winter is mild, quieter and usually cheaper, except during the Christmas and Easter holidays, when crowds and hotel prices rise.
For a first visit, the Centro Storico near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona is hard to beat, as most sights are a walk away. Trastevere suits food lovers and couples, Monti is close to the Colosseum with good value, and Prati is a quieter base next to the Vatican.

Four to five nights gives you time for ancient Rome, the Vatican, the historic centre and an evening in Trastevere without rushing. If you want a day trip to Tivoli or Ostia Antica, or simply a slower pace, plan six or seven nights.
Try the four classic Roman pastas: carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana and gricia. Street food favourites include supplì, fried rice balls with melted cheese, and pizza by the slice. In spring look for artichokes, Roman or Jewish style, and finish the day with gelato from a traditional gelateria.
