Overview

Why travel to Santorini

Santorini is the postcard image of the Greek islands: whitewashed villages clinging to the rim of a flooded volcanic crater, blue church domes and a sea that turns gold at sunset. Hotels in Santorini range from cave suites with private plunge pools carved into the caldera cliffs to relaxed family hotels a few steps from the black-sand beaches on the east coast.

The island is small enough to explore in a few days, yet it packs in a lot. You can walk the clifftop path from Fira to Oia, take a boat to the still-active Nea Kameni volcano and swim in its warm springs, visit the Bronze Age town of Akrotiri preserved under volcanic ash, and taste crisp Assyrtiko white wine in the vineyards around Pyrgos and Megalochori. Evenings are for seafood tavernas, tomato fritters and fava, and of course the sunset over the caldera.

Santorini also works well as part of a wider Greek islands trip. Ferries link it with Ios, Naxos, Paros and Mykonos, so in summer many travellers combine a few nights on the caldera with a quieter beach island or with Athens. From Yerevan the usual route is a flight to Athens and a short domestic hop or ferry to the island. Book early for July and August, when the caldera hotels with the best views fill up first.

Best things to do in Santorini

01

Sunset in Oia

Watch the sun drop into the Aegean from the castle ruins or a terrace in Oia. Arrive early in summer, as the best viewpoints fill up well before sunset.

02

Volcano boat trip

Sail across the caldera to Nea Kameni, hike up to the crater and swim in the warm, iron-rich springs of Palea Kameni.

03

Fira to Oia clifftop walk

A classic hike of around 10 km along the caldera rim through Firostefani and Imerovigli, with views the whole way. Start early to avoid the midday heat.

04

Akrotiri archaeological site

A Bronze Age town buried by a volcanic eruption around 3,600 years ago, with multi-storey houses and streets remarkably well preserved under a protective roof.

05

Red Beach & black-sand beaches

See the dramatic red cliffs of Red Beach near Akrotiri, then swim at the long volcanic-sand beaches of Kamari and Perissa.

06

Wine and local food

Taste Assyrtiko and sweet Vinsanto at wineries around Pyrgos and Megalochori, and try tomato fritters, white aubergine and fava in a village taverna.

Santorini weather by month

The season in Santorini runs from late April to October. May, June, September and early October are the sweet spot: warm sea, long sunny days and fewer crowds than in July and August, when hotel prices peak and the caldera villages are at their busiest. Midsummer is hot and dry, often with strong meltemi winds that can make boat trips choppy. From November to March many hotels and restaurants close, the weather is cooler and rainier, but prices are at their lowest and the island is calm.

Travel tips for Santorini

  1. Caldera-view hotels in Oia, Fira and Imerovigli often involve many steps and no car access, so ask about luggage help if you are travelling with heavy bags or small children.

  2. Book caldera hotels for July and August several months ahead, as the best rooms with private pools and sunset views sell out first.

  3. Public buses run from Fira to most villages and beaches, but renting a car, scooter or ATV gives far more freedom; an international or EU-format driving licence may be required.

  4. Wear comfortable shoes with good grip for the cobbled, stepped paths in the villages and for the volcano hike, and bring sun protection, as there is little shade.

  5. Cards are widely accepted, but keep some euros in cash for small tavernas, beach sunbeds and buses. Tipping is not obligatory; rounding up or leaving 5–10% for good service is appreciated.

When is the best time to visit Santorini?

The best months are May, June, September and early October, when the sea is warm enough for swimming and the crowds are smaller than in midsummer. July and August are the hottest and most expensive months. From November to March many hotels close, but the island is quiet and prices are lower.

Where is the best place to stay in Santorini?

For the classic caldera views and sunsets, choose Oia, Imerovigli or Fira. Oia is the most romantic, Fira is the most convenient for restaurants and buses, and Imerovigli is the quietest. Families and beach lovers usually prefer Kamari or Perissa on the east coast, where hotels offer better value and the beach is on your doorstep.

Do Armenian citizens need a visa for Santorini?

Yes. Santorini is part of Greece, which is in the Schengen area, so citizens of Armenia need a Schengen visa. Apply well in advance of your trip, as you will usually need a hotel booking, flight reservation and travel insurance. Our Visa page and the UTours team in Yerevan can help you with the details.

How many nights do you need in Santorini?

Four to five nights is enough to see the main villages, take the volcano boat trip, visit Akrotiri and enjoy a couple of beach days. If you want to add another island such as Naxos, Paros or Mykonos, or a few days in Athens, plan for a week to ten days in total.

Is Santorini good for a beach holiday?

Santorini is better known for its views than for its beaches, but it does have good ones. Kamari and Perissa have long black-sand beaches with sunbeds and tavernas, while Red Beach and White Beach are more for the scenery. The volcanic sand gets very hot, so beach shoes are useful. For long sandy beaches, combine Santorini with Naxos or Crete.
