Sicily (Italian: Sicilia), the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea (25,708 km²). It is considered an administrative region of Italy, and several small islands nearby are considered part of Sicily. The population of Sicily is about 5 million people.
Throughout its history, it has been of great strategic importance due to its advantageous position at the crossroads of Mediterranean trade routes. Currently, Sicily is one of the autonomous regions of Italy.
