Morocco Volubilis

Volubilis is a partially excavated Berber-Roman city in Morocco, located near the city of Meknes and may have been the capital of the Kingdom of Mauritania. Before Volubilis, the capital of Mauritania may have been in Gilda. Built in an area fertile for agriculture, it dates back to the 1st century BC. Beginning in the 3rd century, it was a Berber settlement before becoming the capital of the Roman Kingdom of Mauretania. Under Roman rule, the city of Rome grew and expanded rapidly, covering an area of over 2.6 acres with 100 km of walls. This prosperity was due mainly to the growing of olives and led to the construction of many beautiful townhouses with large mosaic floors. The city flourished until our era. 2nd century, when he acquired several large public buildings, including a basilica, a cathedral and a triumphal arch.
