Tourism in Greece

Greece is one of the tourist centers of Europe and the world. Up to 18 million tourists visit Greece every year, accounting for 15% of the total number of tourists worldwide.
Tourists in Greece are attracted primarily by the combination of many ancient monuments and a wonderful tropical climate. Greece owns more than 2 thousand islands.
The majority of Greece's income comes from tourism. According to 2009 data, this is 15% of the country's entire Gross Domestic Product. Moreover, according to the Ministry of Economy and Competition, if hidden income is taken into account (in 2007: 36%), the contribution of tourism is 18-20% of GDP.
In addition, approximately 900,000 people work in this sector, including the HoReCa sector, representing 6.9% of the total population. This is the third indicator in the European Union after Malta and Spain. In 2008, Greece received 17.5 million tourists.
