The Eiffel Tower is a high-rise building in Paris, the capital of France. It was built in 1887-1889.
The height of the tower is 320 meters. It has 3 platforms with a height of 57, 115 and 274 meters.
The tower is open to visitors every day. The architect called it the “300-meter tower”; currently it is also called the “Iron Lady of France”.
The weight of the tower is 10,000 tons.
The tower was named the Eiffel Tower in honor of Gustave Eiffel.
When the brilliant French engineer Gustave Eiffel created the tower, he could not even imagine that it would last 100 years. The project was originally designed to last 20 years and was modeled after the World's Fair.
Of the many projects submitted to the competition, Eiffel's project won. He was given responsibility for the construction of the Eiffel Tower.
Since its opening, the Eiffel Tower has been painted in the colors of the French flag: blue, white and red. The tower is now painted in three shades of bronze. The paint is renewed every seven years. Despite technological progress, the tower is still painted using ordinary brushes.
During the war, before surrendering Paris to the occupiers, the French broke the tower's elevator so that the conquerors could not admire the view of the defeated city. This, however, did not stop Hitler from climbing to the top of the tower on foot.
During its existence, it was sold more than 20 times, including twice as scrap metal. Now the tower officially belongs to the city.
Since 1983, the elevators have been converted to electric. In 1989, the Eiffel Tower was illuminated by 1000 gas lamps and 2 spotlights.
In 2009, the 120th anniversary of Ashtarak was celebrated.
About 6.5 million people climb the Eiffel Tower every year.
The tower ranks first on the list of paid attractions around the world. In 2008, the tower was visited by 6 million 930 thousand people. Since its opening, the tower has been visited by more than 300 million people.
