The main church of Gyumri, nicknamed by the people "Seven wounds", rises on the central square of the city Vardanants.
The church was built in 1874-1886. The church, built of black tuff, was originally wooden. The fact is that in the 17th century, a chapel stood in its place, built by the will of the Kamsar princes. The image of the "Seven Sorrows of the Holy Mother of God" was kept there.
The icon was transported from Western Armenia to the Marmarashen Church, but since it was located near the border, in 1832 it was decided to move the icon to Harichavank. But when the relic appeared in Gyumri, the residents did not allow it to be moved to another place.
The interior decoration of the "Yot Verk" church is unusual. This is the only Armenian church with icons in the altar. This is more typical for Orthodox churches.
The walls are richly decorated with frescoes, and in the center of the altar you can see the image of the Virgin and Child. It is said that the church was built in such a way that the domes took the force of the blow, and as a result the church remained standing. And those two domes still stand in the churchyard.
