The currency of Morocco is the dirham. You can exchange foreign currency in banks. Official exchange rate to US dollar: 1 dollar is approximately 10 dirhams. Banks are open Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 11:15 and from 14:15 to 16:00. Saturday and Sunday are days off. During the month of Ramadan, banks are open from 8:30 to 14:00.
Care must be taken when handling currency. Dirhams are not converted or taken out of the country. It is prohibited to change it on the street. You can exchange foreign currency at a bank or special currency exchange offices at the airport. Large bills in the hands of buyers encourage sellers to inflate prices. Credit cards are accepted in most restaurants, almost all hotels and large stores; private traders are extremely reluctant to work with them. American Express traveler's checks are accepted almost everywhere, but checks from other systems are cashed less frequently.
