Overview

Why travel to Tbilisi

Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, is one of the easiest trips from Armenia: about an hour by air or a scenic five to six hours by road. Hotels in Tbilisi range from boutique guesthouses with wooden balconies in the old town to modern international chains on the main avenues, and the city works equally well for a weekend, a family holiday or a New Year break.

The heart of the city is Old Tbilisi, where narrow lanes climb towards the Narikala fortress and the domed sulphur baths of Abanotubani steam beside a small waterfall. Across the Mtkvari river rise the modern Bridge of Peace and the huge Sameba Cathedral, while Rustaveli Avenue leads past theatres, museums and the opera. Leafy Vake and creative Fabrika show the younger, more modern side of the city. The centre is compact, so most sights are within walking distance, and the metro and cheap taxis cover the rest.

Food and wine are a big reason to come. Try khinkali, khachapuri, badrijani with walnuts and churchkhela, and taste Georgian qvevri wine in one of the many wine bars. Tbilisi is also a good base for day trips: the ancient capital Mtskheta with Jvari Monastery and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is close by, and the wine region of Kakheti and the Gudauri ski resort can be reached by car in a few hours.

Tbilisi weather by month

The best time to visit Tbilisi is spring, from April to June, and autumn, from September to October, when the weather is warm and pleasant for walking and day trips. The New Year holidays are popular and hotel prices rise, so book early; the quietest and cheapest period is usually January to March.

Travel tips for Tbilisi

  1. Use the Bolt app for taxis or agree the fare before you get in; the metro and buses are cheap and easy with a transport card or contactless bank card.

  2. Many restaurants add a service charge to the bill, so check before leaving an extra tip.

  3. In churches, women are expected to cover their heads and wear a skirt, and men should avoid shorts; wraps are often available at the entrance.

  4. Wear comfortable shoes: the old town is hilly with uneven cobblestones, and the best viewpoints are up steep lanes.

  5. Book sulphur bath rooms and New Year hotels in advance, and keep some cash in lari for markets and small cafes.
