Sri Lankan cuisine is very similar to Indian cuisine. This is due to the proximity of these countries, as well as a similar range of products used for cooking (seafood, fruits, herbs, various spices). The Sri Lankan diet mainly consists of vegetarian food; Sri Lankans practically do not eat meat. The lack of meat in the Sri Lankan diet is due to the fact that cows are considered sacred animals. For culinary purposes, fish products, tropical fruits, and all kinds of spices are widely used.
