Cairo, the current capital of Egypt (Arabic: القاهرة al-Qahira), is located in northern Egypt on both banks of the Nile River, where the river branches to form a delta.
The ancient part of Cairo is located on the eastern bank of the Nile. from that moment on, the city began to grow to the west. The western part of the city was founded in the 19th century by the Egyptian ruler Ismail Pasha. The design of its western districts was modeled after 19th-century Paris and features wide avenues and gardens.
In the center of Cairo is the green island of Gezira (Zamalek), where embassies, representative offices of large organizations, modern business centers and five-star hotels are located.
The eastern part has been chaotically built over the centuries, with many narrow streets lined with residential buildings. There are also hundreds of ancient mosques here.
Cairo is a university center, the largest city in Africa and the only one on the continent with a multi-line metro.
